Fall 2011 - Winter 2012 is definitely the perfect season for bright colors and bold statements not only in fashion but in makeup looks as well. Another trend that we spotted on Milan runways (among other catwalk shows) this year is drastic smokey eyes. While smokey eyes are always in fashion, they evolve every season bringing different colors, intensity and application techniques to makeup fashion. This fall/winter season there is no need to worry about color and accents for a trendy smokey eyes makeup - unless you really want to. Continuing our series of makeup articles with universal tips for eyes of different colors, we would like to share timeless tips for green eyes. Green eyes are a beautiful gift that allows women to turn them into a beauty magnet by combining changing makeup trends with the art of color mixing that only compliments natural beauty:

1. Green eyes never lose with warm makeup colors, such as all shades of brown eye shadows, copper and gold with dark brown or black mascara (especially for a natural daytime makeup).

2. If you have light green eyes, make sure your makeup kit includes champagne, mild orange and peach shades. For dark green eyes, these colors can be a good base that brings out darker eye shadows on your eyes.

3. For evening makeup looks, do not disregard purple and lilac as well as metallic shades (but no silver!).

4. Be careful not to overuse blue colors and carefully select your pinks not to look tired instead of glowing.

5. Outside of brown and dark brown eye liner (that is usually the best choice for green eyes, as we mentioned before), play around with gray eye pencils empowering them with white or golden color hints in the inside corner of your eyes. We find it interesting that a lot of magazines and trend setters approach makeup from the seasonal angle as opposed to looking at the gifts that mother nature gave to every woman: color of her eyes, skin tone, complexion, etc. On one hand, seasonal trends are important because everybody wants to look fashionable. On the other hand, trendy smokey eyes that seem to be always in style may not appeal to everybody. So, we decided to take another approach: a series of articles about eye makeup that traditionally fits a certain eye color. I promise you will learn a lot from these short tutorials!

Today we will talk about makeup for blue eyes:

1. Sexy “cat eye” looks are great in combination with blue eyes. Just extend the upper pencil line a bit, apply 2 coats of mascara and add pink or gold on the lips or cheeks for the most impressive result. Blue eyes also allow experimentation with eye liner color. Green “cat eye” could also look great.

2. “Nude” makeup looks are the best for blondes with blue eyes and are so easy and every day. Chocolate, peach and beige colors mixed together + perfect skin complexion will make you shine.

3. Red lipstick is the best friend of blue eyes. The best choice of eye shadow in this situation would be royal blue, black or silver.

4. And the final tip: a rainbow on your eyes. Green, pink, baby blue and purple (with purple eye liner) are perfect for a bright winter day and playful mood.

Take a Closer Look: Grays, Browns & Burgundy Are in for Fall/Winter 2012

With makeup choices there always seems to be a problem: do I go for a natural soft look, or do I spot seductive red lips and spice it up? Fall 2011/Winter 2012 season promises to finally allow both!

Skin is always important and fall/winter 2011 is no exception. Keep it as flawless as possible and any makeup will look great. But back to lips: lips bring diversity into the fall color palette. While bright reds are in fashion (the choice of Ralph Lauren, Diane von Furstenberg and Jil Sanders), burgundy lipstick will allow to combine natural browns and nude eyeshadow with the red lips. In fact, one can get away with burgundy lipstick and natural eye makeup even in the office.

If you are not a “red lipstick” type, do not get disappointed: natural nudes, gray and brown colors are also in favor this coming fall (as always). They will look especially fashionable with accented brows and a rich coat of mascara. Eyes rule this fall and some designers featured oriental makeup motives on the runway for winter.

It does look like fall 2011/winter 2012 will be a fun season for those who like experimenting and looking for new makeup ideas!

What Not to Buy: Is Proactive a Fraud or a Poorly Run Business?

For me it is hard to say whether the widely advertised and endorsed by multiple celebrities Proactive is a fraud or not. In my dictionary, when someone takes your money and refuses to give it back under zillion of excuses for customer service mistakes, it is a fraud. On the other hand, Proactive is a decent product (slightly overpriced for the delivered results) but it does what it is supposed to do for many people. So, how do you call a company that meets the product expectations but lies about their policies and holds onto your money taken by mistake? I’d say, this is called a classic example of a company one should not buy from!

As a Chief Editor of OLENA Magazine, I purchase and test products all the time. In 4 years in the industry and in my entire life I have never had a worse experience than the one provided by Proactive Customer Service. Not only I had to call them 4 times to cancel my account that kept drawing money from my credit card, I also had to send the product back and wait for 2 months of processing to get my refund. But at the end of the 2nd month it appeared that my package has never been processed and nobody knows where it is. Now I have to sign and affidavit confirming that I shipped the product back and then (maybe) I will get my money back. It means another couple of months of waiting that will take me to 6 months of hunting down my $40. I assume many people in my place would have given up and maybe this is the company’s secret hope? Just give up and we will keep $40 of each desperate customer increasing our sales with no products sold? When I think about it like that, the word “fraud” immediately comes to my mind…

If Proactive is willing to clear their name and explain the situation and measures they can take to improve their customer service, they are welcome to reach out to me and sit down for an interview. Until then, I strongly recommend NOT to buy any Proactive products. Trust me: the market is full of competitors that might not only provide you with a better experience but with a better price. Take for instance L’Oreal “AcneResponse” or other product lines listed on Google under “Acne Products for Adults”.

Candy colored motorcycle jackets and metallic pieces floated about on Burberry Prorsum’s spring 2011 runway; and even as the gorgeous clothes themselves, the beauty Burberry was pushing this spring season will resonate with us as well. Indeed, the middle parts—that weren’t exact—slightly textured hair, and natural-looking makeup conveyed the simply chic, girl-next-door.

In fact, Burberry’s new makeup line—found in Nordstrom—is trying to keep the world as natural, clean, and pretty as possible. With words attached to individual products such as “sheer” and “natural”, the new line is impacting its let-live philosophy.

Try the look with bits of concealer, thin eyeliner, minimal mascara, matte eyeshadow, and sheer lip gloss. After all, with your natural makeup you should sport your natural hair texture (blow drying your hair after washing, and then finishing off with a few water spritzes will do just fine too—don’t forget the hairspray!). Spring 2011 and Katy Perry Say It’s Time to Think about Your Nails!

Over the past five years stand out nails have become a definite trend and expectation for any gala event. Available to everyone because of affordability and accessibility, we have borne witness to the evolution of the 1940’s nail polishes in nudes, baby pinks and reds to the 90’s dark colors, glitters and neons. These days manicurists can draw anything you want and if you are steady with your non-writing hand you may even do it yourself with the range of “nail art” products on the market. Stereotypes like “black nail polish strictly for Goths/ Emo’s” and “red only for the likes of Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman” have long dissipated thanks to visionary makeup artists. Chanel paved the way with an artist who colored his models bare nails with a black permanent maker before a couture runway show and later helped create the near black “Vamp” nail polish line which became the companies’ best selling product EVER.

Since the mid 2000’s when “Vamp” appeared on runways in varying colors including black and red, the rest of the world seemingly jumped on board the nail color wagon and the craze exploded! Our iconic celebrities, pop stars and models, both male and female, are embracing more risk in this department often making nails the feature of their outfits; this season’s color array further pushing for the manufacture of more colors in nail products.

Nail polish was revolutionized further in late 2010, when OPI teamed with nail fanatic Katy Perry with the technology of a product called Shatter. Used over any nail polish in any color, this top coat does just that! It shatters over your nail color, creating an affect similar to animal print or granite. Shatter became available in stores January 2011 and retails for under $10USD. If you are loving the bright colors and animal print of the season, a risqué neon or this OPI Shatter nail polish may turn out to be the cheapest and best addition to your wardrobe this year.

It must be a contrasting color to provide that color play of the season. If you’re a bright eye shadow novice like me, you can get help from Gucci Westmen (Revlon) who was the chief makeup artist for Oscar de la Renta’s ready to wear S/S 2011 runway; as she recreates the “Oscar look” on a Youtube tutorial. Think: conventional smoky eye but with color! She uses green and blue and reminds us to accentuate those lashes! You will not go wrong if you plan on making a smoky eye out of any hue you use!

Don’t despair if your complexion will not allow eye popping color, you will still be in season with a Bridget Bardot inspired cat eye with nude lips. The colorless cat and standard smoky eyes were the looks chosen by makeup artists at Lanvin, Gucci, Chanel and Burberry Prorsum to name a few.
